Whistleblower Interview: San Onofre – How Safe Is It?

NUCLEAR HOTSEAT SPECIAL REPORT

Libbe HaLevy interviews whistleblower James Chambers

A summary of the current status of San Onofre nuclear reactors after last week’s leaks, discovery of over 800 damaged pipes, and employee falling into the radioactive refueling pool. Featuring an interview with James Chambers, a licensed nuclear reactor operator and whistleblower from San Onofre, who offers his unique perspective on what these alarming developments might mean.

Once again the real truth about Southern California Edison’s inept management of this nuclear facility comes out !

  2. CaptD says:

Yet more TEPCO-type Nuclear Baloney (NB)…
    No leak, nothing radioactive escaped!
    Very Tiny Leak, no problems
    Some leakage, can’t be measured
More Leakage, very small amount could have escaped.
Contract worker fell into radioactive pool
    What is next?
Oh we did not measure it because we were fixing it instead…

  3. CaptD says:

Why nuclear is on the way out:

    Radiation is dangerous to man
Expensive to build compared to Competitive Power Sources.
    Creates long lasting radioactive waste
Risky because Nature can destroy any land based nuclear reactor,
    … Any place anytime 24/7/365!
No insurance for radioactive damages to property or people!

  4. CaptD says:

We now are being ruled by those in Nuclear Denial*; instead of by Leaders that demand an end to the Trillion Dollar Eco-Disaster RISK that Nuclear poses to mankind! The nuclear industry is fighting tooth and nail to maintain it’s market share; yet NOW Solar (of all flavors) is far less costly to construct, faster to construct and carries with it N? Nuclear radioactive baggage that can kill a Countries economy and or those living nearby!
    Ask The Japanese!

The illogical belief that Nature cannot destroy any land based nuclear reactor, any place anytime 24/7/365!

  5. CaptD says:

The NRC gave the Nuclear Industry a “PASS” on the tube wear issue before on San Onofre and other reactors around the Country http://wp.me/p21p6a-77L
    BUT NOW
They are realizing that they have a much bigger problem than they first “imagined”; metal erosion cannot be tolerated when the radioactive leakage is not only high in temperature but also high in amount of radiation!

Would you use a dangerous leaking pressure pot day after day,
… or would you be smart and replace it with something safer?

Many, many more would install Solar if the Utility paid those that installed Solar for the energy they put INTO the grid, at the very same rate that the Utility charges for that same Energy to folks that take Energy OUT of the Grid! By not paying the same amount, the Utility shareholders receive additional money they do not deserve and the folks that have installed solar end up with a much longer payback period!

It is time to STOP THIS UTILITY RIPOFF! http://is.gd/eQog1d

The faster the payback the more that will install solar and the LESS we need Nuclear!

    Win – Win – Win

    • mark hansen says:

actually the power companies should pay the highest spot price of the day the electicity is put into their system by the customer’s alt. green energy since that is what they would have to do if they had to buy it from other power companies.

      • CaptD says:

Yes they should but the Utilities have powerful friend in government, many with their own shares of stock, that are dragging their feet in order to “limit” the growth of solar in the USA!

  8. CaptD says:

Then huge numbers will install Solar!
Users now have an option, that is why the Utilities are VERY worried now!

Nuclear in France set to Exceed cost of Wind!
    http://wp.me/p21p6a-77I
    snip
According to EWEA analysis on the true costs of electricity, nuclear will cost €102 /MWh in 2020 – the average price across Europe taking into account the fact that nuclear plants take a long time to build which pushes up the initial capital cost. Onshore wind energy meanwhile will see a price drop by 2020 falling to €58 /MWh and offshore wind will cost €75 /MWh.

Nuclear will require significant investment in the short and medium term at a rate of at least double the current level of investment, the Court says. Moreover, new plants are likely to be much more expensive to construct.

Look at this map of how little surface area would be required to power the WORLD with Solar:

Notice this was done in 2000 and since then the rate of “wear” has increased dramatically especially at San Onofre and a few other reactors!

This is very bad news for the industry because the replacement of these will be very expensive and may actually be cause to shut the reactor down for good!

  15. chuck mccune says:

i am very interested in this issue, i find the music loop in background to be unhelpful in listening to the audio here,

  16. The primary loop is lightly radioactive, usually Tritium. Other radionuclides such as Cesium or Xenon in the primary indicates a broken or defective fuel assembly which would shut the reactor and require a cleanup of the pressure vessel. The first containment is the zircalloy fuel rod cladding.

Contamination of the primary by radioisotopes will cause corrosion, BTW. If there was a broken fuel rod in the core sometime in the past w/ no cleanup the resulting contamination would effect the steam generator.

When the steam generator leaks there is a pressure drop (and efficiency loss) of the primary which also leads to a shutdown b/c the core is insufficiently cooled.

Keep in mind that ANY Tritium inside the reactor core will wind up outside b/c it is a form of Hydrogen. It migrates though many metals.

Problem is the steam generator is massively costly. Somebody is looking at a repair bill as the steam generators will probably have to be replaced. Who pays? Probably a billion $$$.

  17. Perturbed Byitall says:

What does Southern California Edison pay for the solar power that is generated by private citizens home systems? I can tell you. I receive 3 cents per kilowatt for the power I put back into the grid on MY CAPITAL INVESTMENT. That kilowatt travels to my next door neighbor’s house and he pays SCE anywhere from 17 to 54 cents per kilowatt (various tiers). The Public Utility Commision was lobbied by SCE and did little for solar or the public. What a great mark-up for doing nothing but billing the customer!

  18. ExEd says:

SCEdison San Onofre employees refuse to buy any Edison stock for their 401K plans because they know if there are many problems at the plant someday their stock could easily become worthless.
